SEO & Performance Overhaul: Lighthouse 61 → 100
Technical SEO and performance rescue for a company website — from a failing Lighthouse score to a perfect one, plus a full responsive and accessibility audit.
Outcomes
- Lighthouse SEO score raised from 61 to 100
- 27 Search Console issues resolved; 8 broken redirects fixed
- Tap-target failures cut from 452 to 156 across a 70-page responsive audit
The problem
A B2B engineering company’s website looked fine to visitors but was invisible to search. Lighthouse scored it 61 for SEO, Google Search Console listed dozens of indexing problems, and on phones the site was fiddly to use — small tap targets, overlapping headers, low-contrast text.
The approach
Rather than a redesign, I treated it as an engineering problem with a measurable target:
- Indexing — fixed canonical URLs and hreflang tags, repaired 8 broken redirects, corrected image URLs, and resolved 27 issues reported by Search Console so Google could actually crawl and index the site.
- Performance — converted images to WebP and cleaned up asset loading.
- Responsive & accessibility audit — scripted Playwright to sweep all 70 pages at 7 viewport widths, producing a concrete defect list instead of guesses. Fixed tap targets (452 failures down to 156), header layout at tablet widths, and text contrast to meet the 4.5:1 accessibility standard.
- Regression safety — added automated checks for canonical URLs so future deploys can’t silently reintroduce the problem.
The outcome
The site went from a 61 to a perfect 100 Lighthouse SEO score, Search Console’s issue list was cleared, and the mobile experience stopped losing visitors to mis-taps and unreadable text. The audit tooling stays with the site, so every future change can be verified the same way.
